Just when you thought it was safe to buy a nice new all-singing all dancing DVD player/recorder, along comes a new format war to add to an already confusing marketplace.Once the original DVD standard settled down, DVD players quickly became one of the most successful consumer items of all time. The new format revitalised the home entertainment market, and hardware manufacturers benefited both directly and indirectly, as enthusiasts clamoured to buy bigger and better televisions and sound equipment to get the best from their new DVD players. Then came recordable DVD, but the problem, as is so often the case, was that there were a number of different recording standards, all of them incompatible. It was just like Betamax versus VHS all over again. Now low-cost multi-format recorders supporting all the standards are hitting the streets, the recording problem is becoming less of an issue, and so one could be forgiven for thinking that's the end of the format wars. But technology has a habit of advancing at a relentless pace, and now a new battle is set to commence. The hi-tech companies are fighting it out to establish the standard for next-generation "high capacity" DVDs.

Higher capacities will allow for even better picture and sound quality than the existing standard, and will become more popular as high definition televisions really start to take off. There are two competing high capacity DVD technologies, HD-DVD (High Definition DVD) and Blu-Ray. HD-DVD works by using multiple layers on a single disk, and its main advantage is its low production costs. Blu-Ray is technically superior ? it uses blue laser light instead of the red light used by existing players. This blue light has a smaller wavelength, and so the pits that it creates on the surface of the DVD to encode the data, are smaller. Smaller pits means more pits in the same space, which means higher capacity.

Blu-Ray can store more information than HD-DVD, but presently is more expensive to implement. When Blu-Ray is combined with the multi-layering technology behind the competing format, it will see capacities rise to as much as 200 Gigabytes. Existing DVDs hold only 4.7 Gigabytes. The battle will most likely be won by the format that gets the most support from the big Hollywood studios ? nobody is going to opt for a DVD standard with a small catalogue of titles. With Blu-Ray being backed by the likes of Hitachi, HP, and Sony (who own MGM studios), it would appear to have the edge. Hollywood however, is remaining non-committal, afraid of backing a losing horse.

For now then at least, the formats are caught in something of a chicken-and-egg situation. As has been the case so many times in the past, only time will tell which format will come out on top..

Buying a receiver is one of the most important decisions you're going to have to make when building your home theater. The receiver has a number of functions including; connecting and switching audio sources; connecting and switching video sources; decoding surround sound formats; amplifying an audio signal and sending it to your speakers; tuning in to radio stations; and acting as the interface between you and your home theater. The first thing to think about is whether you want a receiver at all or would you be better off buying a separate decoder, amplifier, and tuner?Despite being a more expensive route - not to mention the extra space needed - separates do have some advantages. You can pick and choose your own combination of components, can upgrade each component individually and won't lose all the functions if one piece develops a fault. On top of that, having each electronic component in a separate box does improve sound quality when compared with having them all on one circuit board. However, the separates route is more expensive, more complicated and needs more space than buying a receiver. And for most people its uneccessary.

Today's receivers do a very good job in all of their functions. So what should should you look out for when buying a receiver? The first thing is to make sure that it has ll the inputs you need for the equipment you need to connect to it. Sounds obvious, but its very easy to overlook. As a mimimum it should have digital audio inputs (optical and co-axial) for Dolby Digital and/or DTS. It should also have analogue audio inputs for CD player, set-top box and possibly DVD-Audio or Super Audio CD player (the last two currently don't have digital outputs in order to make it less easy to pirate CDs). You should also consider whether you want to route all your video sources such as TV, DVD player, and games console through your receiver.

Doing so means you can switch between sources from one controller, very easily. But if you want to do this you'll need to make sure the receiver you're interested in has enough video inputs. These could be S-Video or component inputs are best, or if you're in Europe, Scart. You should also make sure the video output from the receiver is of high quality, so again, it should be S-Video, component or Scart. If you can test a receiver before you buy, its worth comparing the quality of a video signal from a DVD player when its connected directly to a display and comparing it with when its connected via the receiver.

There shouldn't be any noticeable difference in quality. The power rating of the amplifier is also important. The bigger the room you have for your home theater, the more power you'll need. And makes sure that the power rating is quoted in Watts per channel - the last thing you want is to get home with your 100Watt receiver and discover that its power is split between eight speakers in you 7.1 set-up. It's impossible to specify how powerful your amplifier should be, but if your home theater is in a reasonable-sized room, as opposed to an aircraft hanger, 100Watts per channel should be fine. Finally, don't forget the remote control. It's the key interface between you and the reciever and you'll spend a lot of time using it.

So make sure it's comfortable and straightforward to use. The last thing you want is to have to spend ages wading through on-screen menus to get what you want..

Robert Greenwald's "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism," along with Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," was the standout documentary of 2004. Released on DVD by The Disinformation Company in July 2004, "Outfoxed" immediately became the #1 selling DVD on Amazon.com. The film passed a significant milestone by moving 100,000 units in less than three weeks after its release, beating out major studio contenders such as the "Star Wars Trilogy." Sales have now passed 200,000 units, considered a large number for a documentary on DVD, proving that the film continues to strike a chord with audiences worldwide.Since its release, "Outfoxed" has garnered much press coverage. Most recently, the media widely reported that ABC had censored any reference to Fox News Channel in a recent episode of "Boston Legal" ? an episode that featured clips from "Outfoxed" in a courtroom scene. It was also revealed that ABC refused to sell commercial airtime during the program to The Disinformation Company, which had tried to place an ad for "Outfoxed." Despite Fox News Channel's attempts at damage control, the focus on the network as a right-wing propaganda machine remains strong and criticism continues.

Recently, after off-air audiotape was obtained, media reports exposed Sean Hannity's alleged coaching of two of Terri Schiavo's former nurses during their appearance on "Hannity and Colmes" on March 31st. Additionally, the quality of Fox's news reports have again come into question after the network issued a premature report of the death of Pope John Paul II before being retracted with an apology from anchor Shepard Smith.Further fueling the fire is the new "Outfoxed" book, to be released by The Disinformation Company on April 21st. In the book, journalist Alexandra Kitty continues the investigation of Fox News Channel where Producer/Director Robert Greenwald's documentary film sensation left off, digging deeper into Rupert Murdoch's media empire and its dumbing down of the news. The book's release was kicked off with a Salon.com promotion in which "Outfoxed" was offered as a giveaway to potential Premium Salon subscribers. According to Max Garrone, VP of Operations for the Salon Media Group, "Salon has been very interested in 'Outfoxed' since the DVD came out because it was quite a sensation with our audience. Our audience loves 'Outfoxed' because they feel Fox has been distorting the news while brandishing a facetious tag line."According to The Disinformation Company's President Gary Baddeley, "'Outfoxed' is proving to be more than just a successful documentary ? it's changing the media landscape by making it known very loudly and very clearly that Fox News Channel is anything but an objective source of news.

We all owe Robert Greenwald and his partners on the film, MoveOn.org and Center for American Progress, a huge thank you."Robert Greenwald, whose new attack ad aimed at Governor Schwarzenegger aired at last weekend's state Democratic convention in Los Angeles, has acknowledged both the "Boston Legal" censorship as well as the vilification of "Outfoxed" by Fox News Channel as key components to the film reaching the 200,000 sales mark: "I am astounded at having passed 200,000 in sales on the DVD and I want to express my appreciation and thanks to Bill O'Reilly and all the folks at Fox News who have attacked us and made this milestone possible."

Many people use markers to write on the surface of their CDs and DVDs when labeling their media. What most people do not know is that using markers, such as Sharpies, ballpoint pens, or any other sharp object can be very damaging to the media. Most markers contain chemicals that create oxidation, which can deteriorate the CD or DVD. The oxidation can ruin the aluminum, which covers the surface of the media and ultimately can destroy the data on the disc. Additionally, these types of markers can damage the physical structure of the disc. There are a couple of ways to avoid these problems.

Special pens are now sold which are made specifically for writing on media. One brand is called Staedtler Lumocolor CD/DVD Markers (pictured to the right). Another tip to keep in mind is that off the shelf markers can be used on media that has been screen printed because the screen printing protects the data from chemical destruction..

The introduction of the VCR changed so much for the television viewer. Before the introduction of the VCR, you had to watch the show when it was broadcast by the network ? that was your only option. If you recorded your favorite show, you were able to watch it when you wanted to ? and as many times as you wanted to. All you needed was a blank video tape and a VCR. That has all changed with the DVR.A DVR, or Digital Video Recorder, is technology that takes all the great features of a VCR and places it in the digital age.

Instead of multiple tapes, you have a single hard drive. Instead of degrading tape quality issues, shows are now recorded digitally that can last forever. Instead of programming a VCR through a complicated interface of tiny buttons on a remote control, you can program your DVR through a simple point and click interface, possibly even from your home computer. In addition to the ability to watch your shows whenever you want to, there is another benefit to the DVR that most people only mention quietly ? the ability to quickly forward through your commercials. With everything being digital, a 30 second skip can be done with the click of a button. Imagine getting back 10 minutes of your life back for every hour of television your watch!DVRs come in many shapes and sizes.

There are set-top boxes that go right on your television set. They don't require any other products to work. Some brand names of these options include Tivo and ReplayTV. Many satellite companies (and digital cable companies) such as Dish Network and Direct TV have options as well. Microsoft Windows Media Center is an option for Windows users.

There are also options for the Mac and/or Linux user.Once you have a DVR record your shows, you can watch them whenever you want. Some systems even let you transfer the content to a DVD or your laptop. The Digital Video Recorder (DVR) changes everything for the television viewer. I hope you can join the revolution..

"CD/DVD Master" is the disc you provide to your CD/DVD vendor for replication or duplication of that media. Here are some helpful tips for creating a high quality master:

Always use high quality media. All media is not the same. Do your research and choose a brand that will produce a high quality disc consistently.
Avoid burning from a network source.

If your source files are on a network drive, copy the files to your local hard drive before burning a disc. If you cannot move the files to your local drive, please use the "Copy To Hard Drive First" feature. Your burning software will create a temporary image file during the burning process. When the burn is complete, the temporary file is deleted.
Avoid burning on a laptop computer running on battery power.

Fluctuations in available power may yield poor results.
Always "Finalize" your disc. If you use the drag and drop interface that is built into some operating systems (Windows XP), be sure to select "finalize disc". This will increase the "read" compatibility in other CD-ROM drives.
Don't use packet-writing method to burn master disc. This method is most common with burner drives that have "re-write" capabilities. It is similar to the "drag-and-drop" method described above.

This burn method produces discs that cannot be read on many CD-ROM drives. We cannot accept a master that is burned to a ReWritable (CD-/+RW or DVD+RW) disc.
Avoid impact or movement of the drive during burn. This can cause the laser to skip or jump a track, which will produce errors or a bad disc.
Use "burn-proof" feature if available. This feature allows the drive to slow down the burn speed in the event the computer cannot supply data fast enough. This can increase the total burn time, but the quality of the disc will be greater.
Avoid having multiple applications open when burning, especially those that access the internet or network.

This can hinder your computer's ability to "feed" data to the burner drive at the proper rate. Poor quality discs and burn rejects could be the result.
There are exceptions and variables to all the statements above. If you have any questions regarding how to burn your master, please contact the article writer..

The proliferation of portable DVD players has dramatically changed the videography approach.Digital era prompted people to make critical choices. Videotapes' life came to an end as the DVDs and DVD players appeared and replaced them by and large. To meet the emerging needs, new services and new jobs showed up, drawing out a growing industry.Preserving for the futureIf you really want to preserve your touching family records (weddings, births, anniversary moments) or you really need to preserve and share your business presentations, then you should definitely transfer onto DVD formats.Old formats have been forsaken because: * old videotapes are much more fragile * over time the degradation is imminent * videotapes lose quality in case you make copies to try to preserve or share them, and maybe worse of them, * you arent't allowed to a easy access, play, and search. On the other side, with a DVD format you can: 1. watch much more conveniently on DVD players (even on the road, with portables), desktops, laptops 2. DVD menus and chapter breaks allow you to browse through scenes and jump directly to a favorite clip.

DVDs may include also other materials, such as photo slide shows and computer files. And maybe best of all advanatges of digital technology: 3. each copy you make is an precise duplicate of the original, so you can show and register your memories into the future. In other words, you have the possibility to realize personal optimized records.Well, who can do all these, at high standard ? * You, by our own. If you want your video transferred onto DVD with basic menus and chapters, you should ask for services like YesVideo and HomeMovie.com. All you have to do is to send them the tapes.

They are to digitize and process them into DVD format, burn them to disc, and then ship back to you what you asked for. The client is offered the posibility to get back the tapes from a store that represents one of these services. Or, in case you don't have enough time or required skills, * A professional video production or DVD authoring facility to make the job.Live Event Production ServicesBy recording live award shows, live concerts, music festivals outdoor, corporate events and variety shows, entertainment industry has given a whole new significance to videography industry. There are now many professional companies doing this job at very high quality levels. They have to register/shoot and edit what is happening on the stage, but also: * to integrate various moments: the show itself, short interviews before and after, what is called "behind the scenes", very appreciate by the artists themselves and the audience, too * finally, to pack all formats: live orchestras, audio and video playback, television production, sound systems and put on a DVD format to deliver * to authorize the productGiven the fact that these kind of video productions has additionally a documentary value, they are highly rated in entertainment industry.

Besides, 1. the easiness of delivering and playing in home theater or on long trips by car 2. the compatibility and 3. the connectivity on different advanced playersmake live event productions very popular, too. And all these, thanks to the yielding DVDs revolution..

You LOVE watching movies, but don't always have the time to roundup the family and journey to the local theater, or can afford to shell out the money for the cost of the tickets and the criminally priced greasy popcorn. So, you often resort to renting videos from your local store, but watching them on your 27" TV just doesn't quite have the same impact. Not only is the picture quality awful, the sound is even worse through those 4" speakers in your TV set. You've been hearing a lot about "Home Theater", and both your neighbor and your brother-in-law have the huge, new, big screen TVs, powerful surround receivers, and gargantuan speakers to shake the entire house. The kids are begging for a similar system, but your spouse is saying "no" to remodeling the front room for a wall full of techno gadgets.

So, how do you keep everyone happy? Perhaps the answer lies in a home theater system. Whether you are considering a home theater-in-a-box for $200, or are adding a entire room to house your $25,000 state-of-the-art equipment, there are hundreds of options and choices in the design and construction of your ultimate home cinema.Home theater design has reached record levels of stylishness and complexity. Having a private theater used to mean you were either a wealthy celebrity, CEO of Paramount Pictures, or president of the United States. Today, however, with the advanced audio-visual technology (think DVD players, powerful new speakers, and digital high-definition projectors) nearly everyone can afford a stylish home entertainment environment that can rival your local movie theater. The term "home theater" refers to any combination of audio and visual equipment in your home that attempts to duplicate or surpass the sights and sounds of the movie theater experience. This definition can vary widely, however.

On the high end, you can have a custom designed (and built) home theater that costs thousands of dollars--complete with high end video projector, state-of-the-art DVD player(s), separate amplifiers for each channel, dozens of in-ceiling speakers and some subwoofers that can shake the paint off your neighbor's garage. In reality, home theater in most households does not consist of major room re-modeling, expensive custom installations, or a lot of money. It can be as simple as a 27 inch TV, a basic DVD player, inexpensive stereo receiver and a set of modest speakers. You can have a home theater in just about any room of the house, a small apartment, office or even a dorm room. The options are nearly endless and the choices are yours! Any home theater starts with a fantastic television screen. Screen size is no longer the only choice you have to make.

You now have the option of standard tube televisions, flat-screen plasma displays, rear-projection televisions, in addition to the high-end front projector systems and pull-down wall screens. To add to the confusion, each of these types of screens is available in standard quality or the new high-definition format. The second, and some would say most important piece of equipment, is the sound system. If you are truly looking to recreate the movie sound in your home, surround sound is your best bet. It is a recording technique that, when paired with a speaker system, puts the viewer in the center of the action with sounds that move front to back, and side to side. It is not about louder sound, rather, it is about sound that envelops the listener and provides directionality to off-screen sound effects.A media player is another component to your system, and most people today choose DVD as their preferred format.

When connected to a receiver and speakers, or when connected to a home theater system, most DVD players can play audio CDs. If you plan to use your DVD player to play CDs on a regular basis, you may want to consider a multidisc player over a single disc model.Other necessities and accessories range from speaker choices, lighting controls, auto-retracting curtain (to conceal the screen), and certainly comfortable seating. Seating choices, like everything else, vary widely. Your biggest decision in this area is whether you want your home theater to look like a "home" or a "theater." If you want the miniature theater look, you can get stadium type seating that closely resembles your local theater. For a more "homey" look, you may wish to go with more traditional armchairs..
